Night Qualification (Helicopters)
In order to fly as Pilot in Command at night, with or without passengers, a helicopter pilot must hold a helicopter Night Qualification.
Also if you plan to gain a Commercial Pilot Licence (H), then a Night Qualification is a pre-requirement for the issue of a CPL (H).
The Night Qualification can be completed in a Robinson R22 helicopter or in a Robinson R44 helicopter. Once completed it allows a pilot to fly any helicopter during official night, which is defined as the period between 30 minutes after sunset, and 30 minutes before sunrise.
The completion of the Night Qualification consists of:
- 5 hours ground school instruction
- 10 hours of dual instrument flying
- 5 hours helicopter night flying, including 3 hours of dual instruction and 5 solo night circuits (take-offs and landings)
- The qualification must be completed within 6 months
Once the Night Qualification is completed, it allows the pilot to fly a suitably equipped helicopter at night.
